SATURDAY
saturday in the park i think it was the 4th of july
money mark,
mutabaruka with an electrified ankh-mic,
KRS-1 talking liberation, justice, revolution.
dave matthews band ... this was the first time i saw them live. may they
never die.
then, in the middle of Herbie Hancock's set, a thunderstorm rolled in.
it was't raining, and the field was
packed. then POW lightening. i wasnt
sure if it had hit in the stadium or not. Herbie knew nothing i suppose
cause he was still rockin. yeah, the concert was loud. so the band
played on, and people sort of looked around going 'what the hell was
that?' the jello jigglers down front kept jigglin.
michael stipe came downstage after the lightening song had ended and
announced a weather delay, at least 15 minutes until the concert would
resume. the jumbotrons faded, and the grids above the stage sank halfway
to the stage. michael asked the crowd to leave the field and retreat to
the seats because of the danger, and especially to back away from under
the jumbotrons. meanwhile an ambulence tried to push its way through the
crowd.
the rain came, and forced people up under the second level. there was
more room on the feild. people started kicking the abundant water bottles
around. the crowd got into the festivities. someone started the wave.
there was a pink nerf football and a tiny game errupted.
a group started running circles around the field. eventually about 150
people were following, all in a mass, and the thing was in danger of
running into its own tail.
michael came to the front of the blue stage. he announced that the
concert would be called off until sunday, appologizing to those without
sunday tickets. he promised that some saturday bands, including R.E.M.,
would be fit into the sunday schedule.
so, we went to get pizza. and on sunday...
